Following reports received from the Department of Public Safety Communications (DPSC) on the night of 4th April 2021 in keeping with established protocols, it has been confirmed by the Customs and Border Control Service (CBC) that the electronic monitoring devices that monitored 10 migrants, all lost connection at sea, and as a result CBC has been unable to verify their current whereabouts.

The electronic monitoring technology and operating procedures utilized by the Department of Public Safety Communications (DPSC) has been confirmed to be working effectively according to an ongoing inquiry following the incident.

The DPSC extended the Electronic Monitoring of Offenders Programme to Customs and Border Control, enabling them to use the wearable tracking technology to monitor the Cuban nationals.

CBC would like to assure the public that the migrants are not prisoners and have no restrictions in moving about on the island.

CBC is currently working with partner agencies, including, the RCIPS the Cayman Islands Coast Guard and DPSC to investigate the incident and locate the migrants. The DPSC is compiling a comprehensive report which will include information extracted from their automated systems to assist the CBC and RCIPS with their ongoing investigation into this matter.
